AI Can Help Optimise Your Brand. But It Can't Give It a Soul.
AI Can Help Optimise Your Brand. But It Can't Give It a Soul.
I’ve always had a strong intuition. It got kind of squashed after a few years in the corporate world though. It was all about data data data. So much so that, after a while, I not only forgot to listen to that wise voice inside but I couldn’t even hear it anymore. A big part of my transformational journey since leaving my corporate career has been about reconnecting with that intuition. And as I was reading my friend Mia Jafari’s book “Collaborating with Life: Re-awakening Human Innovation in the Age of AI”, something struck a chord about how our human intuition can never be replaced by AI.
She talks about “dancing in between intuition and logic” and how pyschologist Daniel Kahneman, shares two modes of thinking: System 1 and System 2. System 1 is the intuitive thinking. It’s instinctual, creative, non-linear, emotional and subjective. Whilst System 2 is, you guessed it, the logical thinking. It’s deliberate, methodical, linear, rational and analytical.
And it got me thinking about how — with the rise of AI — we are using more and more linear thinking to build our brands today.
What AI Does Brilliantly
Let's be clear: I'm not anti-AI. I use it every day, and honestly, it vastly outperforms us as humans in Systems 2 thinking — analysing, structuring, optimising within what already exists.
It’s great for analysing vast quantities of data, automating tasks, helping organise and rationalise alternatives and thoughts. It's also a genuinely great brainstorming partner. I use it constantly to analyse brand positioning and messaging, and to work through different strategic directions or ideas.
That's System 2 doing exactly what it should: taking what's already there and helping you think it through, faster and more clearly.
But here's the catch. AI can only see what already exists. It can analyse the market as it is today — but it has no reference point for what doesn't exist yet. Which means it cannot think beyond the status quo. If you're building something the market hasn't seen yet, AI has nothing to compare it to. It can't imagine it into being. And it cannot bring new solutions, innovative thinking or emotional resonance to your brand. Only a human mind can do that.
Building Beyond The Status Quo
Science proves that decision-making actually happens in the emotional brain (the limbic brain), not the rational one. Which means brands need to create that emotional connection with their customers first, before ever bringing in the rational arguments for why they're the right choice.
If you’ve been following the fashion scene over the past couple of weeks, you will have seen that French brand Sézane, built on a distinctly warm, bohemian look and feel, has just unveiled a new identity: a more elevated, modern image, cleaner lines and higher prices. And their community's reaction was immediate: they feel betrayed.
The brand followed the rational path towards expansion. Launch in the US. Get PE backing. Rebrand to attract a new audience. But in passing, they totally forgot the emotional attachment to the brand. The loyal customers that have bought into what the brand stood for for twenty years. System 2 thinking may help plan a growth strategy, but rely too heavily on rational thinking and you risk losing what made your brand so special in the first place: its soul.

I’ll be digging more into Sézane and how to scale without losing your soul next month, stay tuned!
What AI Can't Do
I've seen this before. My very first job in marketing at Procter & Gamble was on Herbal Essences (it was a while back, but I won’t say when, it would be too easy to calculate my age!) — a haircare brand built entirely around a sensory, pleasurable experience in the shower, not the usual "science-backed hair benefits" the rest of the category leaned on. It stood out because it didn't try to fit in.
Then the brand chased the category norm: new packaging, new campaign, hair benefits front and centre, just like everyone else. I was tearing my hair out (well, not literally, but you get the point!). And of course it flopped. Herbal Essences without its experiential soul simply wasn't Herbal Essences anymore.
This is System 1 at work, and long before AI ever entered a marketing meeting, I lived it firsthand. The data was telling the team to chase category norms, yet my gut already knew that wasn’t the right call. Thankfully, several years later, after several million had been lost, the team went back to the brand's original fundamentals, and it found its way back.

It's the same instinct Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, describes in Shoe Dog (amazing book by the way, I highly recommend it!). He spent hours alone in his swivel chair — his own System 1 time — letting ideas surface before ever bringing them to his team. Only then did they head into what Knight's team affectionately called their "Buttface" meetings: the irreverent, unfiltered retreats where every idea got picked apart, debated, and stress-tested. System 1 first. System 2 after.
The Intuitive Path Forward
The problem is, intuition and creativity can't be controlled or scheduled. Sometimes they come in a flash. Sometimes they need time to emerge.
That's what happened to me over the past couple of months. Ahead of the summer, I knew something needed to shift in my business. I kept trying to analyse my way to an answer. I discussed it over and over with my buddy Claude, but it felt like pushing a boulder uphill. It just wouldn't click. Claude couldn’t help me create something that didn’t yet exist.
So I paused. I disconnected. And that's when things started falling into place. I didn't even need to think it through — I simply came back knowing exactly what I had to do. Within two weeks, I'd rebuilt my entire website and offers. And before you ask, yes, I then did it with AI. System 2 helps speed things up no end when you know exactly what you stand for and where you’re going.
What This Means For Your Brand
If you're building or leading a brand right now, you're almost certainly leaning on AI somewhere — for research, for competitive analysis, for media programming, for content. And you should. It's a brilliant System 2 tool: fast, structured, capable of processing more data than any human could get through alone.
But if that's all you're leaning on to grow, you'll end up with a brand that looks like every other brand using the same tools, trained on the same data, optimising toward the same "best practice." Efficient, polished and completely forgettable.
More content isn't the same as more meaning. AI makes it easier than ever to fill the feed — but familiarity without something meaningful at its centre is just noise. And noise doesn't build a brand. Meaning does.
The brands that stand out are the ones still making room for System 1. The leader who trusts a gut feeling even when the numbers don't back it up yet. The team that pauses long enough to notice something the data can't show them. The brave, sometimes irrational conviction that this is worth pursuing, even before you can fully explain why.
I saw a post from Bold Bean’s founder Amelia Christie-Miller about this the other day. Bold Bean was actively tracking their influencer gifting plan. And despite the numbers looking good on paper, with reach increasing, something felt off. Creator engagement was sliding. So instead of just writing it off as a slow patch, they really dug into what was going on, putting more thought into every parcel instead of just chasing volume. They realised these creators needed to feel like they’re part of something rather than another brand turning up in their inbox. And it turned the entire strategy around.
System 1 can be extremely powerful when we learn to use it. Trust your intuition! It's what makes the difference between a brand you remember and one you don’t.
